A drilling depth number alone is not enough. Before selecting a machine, confirm the planned well depth, finished casing size, pump outside diameter, geology, drilling method and road conditions. Larger boreholes and harder formations reduce the practical depth margin of a compact rig.

Confirm the submersible pump outside diameter and the installation clearance required by the pump supplier.
The casing inside diameter must be larger than the pump outside diameter so the pump can be installed and serviced.
The borehole diameter must be larger than the casing outside diameter, allowing room for wall thickness, gravel pack and sealing.
